Nima Dahir CV

I’m an urban sociologist and scholar of race, ethnicity, and immigration. My research focuses on the intersection of race and immigration, and how these factors shape neighborhoods and the lives of residents. I’m particularly interested in understanding how Black immigrants are transforming Black neighborhoods and, more broadly, Black America.

My work investigates how race and immigrant status intersect and modify one another in shaping residential patterns, neighborhood change, and residential segregation. By examining where Black immigrants live and their impacts on these neighborhoods, my research offers insights into the future of racialized spatial stratification.

In addition to my main research focus, I also explore how race and immigration influence various aspects of neighborhood change, such as property ownership, the prevalence of surveillance cameras, and physical disorder. Through this work, I aim to broaden our sociological understanding of spatial inequality and enhance the methodological and theoretical tools available for studying these complex issues.

I hold a PhD and master’s in sociology from Stanford University, where my research was supported by grants and fellowships from the American Educational Research Association, the National Science Foundation, and the Knight-Hennessy Scholarship. I also hold dual bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and economics from The Ohio State University. My work has been published in journals including The Russell Sage Foundation Journal of the Social Sciences, City & Community, Socius, and the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies.

I’m a Columbus native and proud Buckeye. In my free time, I love to practice yoga, find new restaurants, and explore new places on foot.
